Main Line Native Dethrones James Holzhauer On 'Jeopardy!'

Emma Boettcher, of Paoli, brought James Holzhauer's $2.4 million "Jeopardy!" run to an end Monday night.

PAOLI, PA — After weeks of massive payouts on "Jeopardy!", James Holzhauer's reign came to and end Monday night. And it was a Main Line native who brought him down.

Emma Boettcher, a 27-year-old librarian at the University of Chicago, defeated Holzhauer after his 32-game run Monday night.

Boettcher is a Paoli native and Conestoga High School graduate, according to Daily Local News.

Early in Monday's game, Boettcher showed a strong command of the game and board, beating Holzhauer to the buzzer many times and even going for the high dollar amount clues, one of Holzhauer's signature tactics.

Later on in the game when she and Holzhauer's scores weren't that far off, Boettcher pulled another move from his playbook and went for a full Daily Double. She aced the question, jumped ahead of the champ, and didn't look back.

Going into Final Jeopardy, Boettcher had a roughly $3,000 lead over Holzhauer.

The final category was "Shakespeare's Time," and it turns out while studying as an undergrad a Princeton University, Boettcher wrote her thesis on Shakespeare. Naturally, she nailed the question and bet nearly half of her total, giving her a $46,801 payout at the end of the day. Holzhauer bet a mere $1,399, ending his time on the show.

According to the website JeopardyFan.com, Boettcher will face a graphic designer from Astoria, New York and a Ph.D student from Los Angeles, California in Tuesday's night game.

"Jeopardy!" airs at 7 p.m. on ABC, so tune in to cheer on the Main Line native who slayed the "Jeopardy!" giant.
