Presenting Senior Sweatshirts
Phelps celebrates the class of 2021 with a special hoodie, handed out at assembly on November 5.
Just in time for cooler temperatures and shorter days, The Phelps School recognized the Class of 2021 with a favorite fall tradition: the Senior Sweatshirt Assembly. The custom originated in 2015, under Student Body President Rodrigo Colon '15 in collaboration with the Phelps administration. Since then, each graduating class has designed a hoodie to commemorate senior year. This year's sweatshirt was designed by Nathan McIntosh '21 of Freeport, Bahamas, and features the Phelps mascot, the Lion, wearing this year's most iconic accessory, the face mask, across the back of the design.
Cozy though the sweatshirts may be, the most heartwarming aspect of the tradition is their presentation. Each senior chooses a favorite faculty member to award him his hoodie with a short speech before the assembled student body. In hailing each young man in the Sweatshirt Assembly, the faculty always elicit some good-natured laughter, as well as more than a few tears in appreciation for a particular student's journey. The best part? For the rest of the year, seniors can wear this sweatshirt on Fridays and remain "in uniform"!
