Thanksgiving To Go for Local Seniors
Surrey volunteers and community partners team up to provide hot Thanksgiving dinner to seniors in Delco and Chesco.
Thanksgiving is a little less empty this year for many local seniors who have been severely affected by the pandemic.
In Media, Thanksgiving to Go was sponsored by Media Fellowship House with help from a group of volunteers, local churches, businesses, social services organizations and restaurants. The program provided a hot Thanksgiving meal, prepared by Cedar Creek Catering, for pick up last Sunday. Volunteers from Surrey picked up and delivered dinners for home bound seniors. "Older adults are some of the most affected by the pandemic," says Kathy Henderson, Surrey’s Delaware county center director. “They are socially isolated, frequently impacted by food insecurity and worried about financial stability.”
To brighten the spirits of seniors receiving the meals, Surrey included turkey cards made by local children using the outlines of their hands and collected by the Media Upper Providence Free Library.

In Chester county several volunteers cooked, packed and delivered more than 60 meals. Children decorated the bags and cards to make the deliveries festive and cheerful.
Recipients were thrilled by the food and by the outpouring of community support. One woman, named Kay, penned this thank you note.

“Happy Thanksgiving! I want to thank everyone for the meal you sent us. The food was perfect. But how grateful I felt to feel the caring and sharing.”
