Penn State To Return To Nameless Jerseys

"There is only one name that truly matters," head coach James Franklin said.

Penn State will be sending nameless Nittany Lion soldiers out into battle on the gridiron this fall.

The football team will remove the names from the backs of its jerseys beginning this season, according to a statement released by the program on Thursday.

The move is intended to honor an old Penn State football tradition that was in place for 125 years until 2012, when the names were added to the jerseys to recognize their dedication to the university.

“There’s only one name that matters,” a promotional poster for the announcement read.

In the same statement, the program announced that their poster for the 2015-2016 season would be distributed at various locations around State College on Thursday evening from 6:45 until 7:45 p.m.

“It’s time we bring back the tradition that represented Penn State for 125 years,” head coach James Franklin said in a statement. “We are a strong family, playing for one goal, one university and there is only one name that truly matters, Penn State.”

The poster will include the saying “Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Names. All Game.” which “reflects the history and tradition of Penn State football and its classic uniforms,” according to the press release.

The football team will begin their 2015 season against Temple at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 5 at 3:30 p.m.
