2020 Census Time is Here - The Library Can Help You

March is Census month! Over the next week or so, you will be receiving your official US Census, and this time around, it’s a little different. As it is every 10 years, the goal is to have everyone counted, so this year, they’re working to make it as easy as possible for you to do so. You will receive a code in the mail for you to go online and fill out the information.

The Library staff are here to answer any questions you may have about it, as well as get you onto a computer if you don’t have access to one anywhere else. Being counted in the Census is critical for local services funding including, Medicaid, local health and wellness programs, roads and highways, fire departments, school funding and grants, providing housing assistance to older adults, and many other programs and resources. Knowing exactly how many people – including children – live in an area also helps the Library, as we plan collections, programs and resources partly on this data.

It's 12 questions and shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes of your time. If you would like more information, including a sample questionnaire, please go to 2020census.gov. And if you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask us. We’re here to help you get counted!

Quick facts about the census:

  • The information you provide is kept anonymous and can never be used against you. Under Title 13 of the U.S. Code, the Census Bureau cannot release any responses that publicly identify you or others in your household. Your answers are only used to produce statistics. Violators of this Code face stiff fines and prison.
  • The Census Bureau will never ask for your social security number, bank or credit card information, mother’s maiden name, or for money, donations, or political party. If you are asked for this information, it is a scam.
  • For the first time, you will be able to respond to the Census online, by phone or by mail.
  • The statistical data results released by the Census Department will be used by schools, governments, businesses and more. The last census (2010) data is available to everyone at data.census.gov. Want to know more about your community? Go check it out.
