Roads, Schools Closed After Storms In Warminster

Street Road in Warminster was "impassable" Friday morning between York and Norristown roads, officials said.

WARMINSTER, PA —Street Road was shut down and schools were closed in Warminster on Friday after the area was among the heaviest hit by strong overnight storms that rolled through the area.

Warminster Township Manager Gregg Schuster said on Facebook that there were "multiple road closures" including Street Road between York and Norristown roads. He reported that closure at about 8:20 a.m. Friday.

He said the National Weather Service would be in Warminster on Friday to determine whether a tornado touched down overnight.

Schools in the Warminster-based Centennial School District also were closed on Friday, after overnight storms closed roads and knocked out power on some campuses.

"Due to the numerous road closures and no power at some of our schools, all Centennial School District schools are closed today, November 1," the district said in a message on its website.

Some students who attend Middle Bucks Institute of Technology were picked up by buses on Friday morning, but transportation home was being arranged, according to district officials.

The Warminster library, Ben Wilson Senior Center and Five Ponds Golf Club all were closed Friday morning due to power outages, according to the township.

In Bucks County, officials were reporting power outages and road hazards Friday morning after the heavy Halloween-night storms.

Late Friday afternoon, Schuster said all outages had been given restoration estimates by PECO, but that officials there said they were dealing with widespread damage with limited resources.

Centennial Superintendent David Baugh said several schools remained without power Friday afternoon and that, while officials hoped all campuses would be ready to go by Monday, parents should have backup plans just in case.

According to PECO's outage map, at least 2,000 customers in Warminster remained without power at about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Early Friday morning, the following roadways were closed with power lines and trees downed on them, according to Warminster Township Police:

  • Street Road, from York Road to North Norristown Road
  • Bristol Road, from Tulip Road to Wimbledon Drive
  • Bristol Road, from Old York Road to Log College Drive

Police were urging motorists to avoid those areas if possible.
