The storm damage in Warminster and elsewhere in Bucks County was so heavy that a National Weather Service crew was in town Friday to determine whether a tornado had touched down. In the end, the crew determined that straight-line winds that reached 110 m.p.h. caused the destruction in the area, including downed trees and wires.
The National Weather Service confirmed the same system caused an EF2 tornado in Glen Mills.
The storm knocked out power for thousands in the area. More than 31,000 PECO customers in Bucks County were without power mid-morning on Friday, with nearly 6,000 outstanding outages in Warminster alone. As of Friday night at 8 p.m., more than 2,200 outages remained.
Schools in the Warminster-based Centennial School District also were closed on Friday, after overnight storms closed roads and knocked out power on some campuses.
Late Friday afternoon, Centennial Superintendent David Baugh said several schools remained without power and that, while officials hoped all campuses would be ready to go by Monday, parents should have backup plans just in case.
