Bristol Locals, Poppasquaw Camp Celebrate Transfer of DOD Building to Bristol

Hundreds crowded the field beside the Quinta-Gamelin facility at Colt State Park. The building, now officially under Bristol's ownership, will be renovated into a community center at a cost of $1 million.

The lawn outside of the Quinta-Gamelin facility on Tuesday bustled with activity as residents of all ages crowded the field, hinting at what the building will look like as a community center.

The US Department of Defense officially transferred ownership of the building - and the keys - to the town of Bristol in an official ceremony in front of the building in Colt State Park on Tuesday afternoon. The town plans to renovate the building into a comprehensive community center for all ages over the next year.

At a price tag of $1 million, the renovated facility will include a town fitness center complete with treadmills and other machines, a gathering space, a gymnasium, fitness machines, a meeting room, an arts and crafts space and a senior program.

The community center will tie in to the East Bay Bike Path, as the state Department of Environmental Management has reportedly committed to constructing a connection pathway.
