Bristol Police Make Arrest Following String Of Car Break-Ins

A Swansea man is facing charges after Bristol police say he stole items from several vehicles in early March.

BRISTOL, RI — A Swansea, Massachusetts man has been charged in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins in Bristol in early March. Richard Smith, 21, is accused of stealing items from three separate vehicles. Following the incidents, Bristol Police are reminding residents to always lock their cars when unattended.

The thefts happened on March 5, when police say items were reported stolen from three different vehicles in the State Street neighborhood, between DeWold and Ansonia Avenues.

A stolen debit card was later discovered to have been used in a Cumberland Farms on Metacom Avenue. Using surveillance video of the fraudulent transaction as well as tips from the public and other information, police were able to identify the suspect as Smith.

During questioning, police say Smith admitted to the theft, leading to his arrest. Smith has been charged with one count of fraudulently using a credit card, three counts of larceny under $1,500 and three counts of tampering with vehicles. Police say further charges could come as the investigation continues.
