October Is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month: Gov. Raimondo

The governor, son Tommy and dog Sparky have a video message.

By Gov. Gina Raimondo

In honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this October, I wanted to share with you a story about the newest member of my family.

For about a year, my son Tommy had been begging for a dog. So, one day earlier this spring, we went to the animal shelter. Almost immediately, we fell in love with a three-year-old Yorkie mix. Tommy brought him home and named him Sparky, and they’ve been pretty much inseparable ever since.

I didn’t grow up with a dog, so I’ve learned a lot over the past few months. And as a mom, I’ve been proud to see Tommy grow into a really amazing “Dog Dad.” In just a short amount of time, Sparky has become part of the family.

You can learn more about Sparky and Tommy in the video above.

As Governor, I've supported measures that promote animal welfare. Last year, I signed legislation proposed by Senate Majority Leader Dominick J. Ruggerio and Representative William W. O’Brien that increased penalties for perpetrators of animal cruelty. This year, I signed legislation introduced by Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin and Representative O’Brien to speed up the process of adoption for abandoned and impounded animals.

Sparky ended up in a safe, loving home. But across Rhode Island, there are still thousands of homeless pets who need a forever home. One of the key organizations dedicated to caring and advocating for these animals is the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The RISPCA has been leading the charge for animal welfare for nearly 150 years—not only supporting adoptions, but investigating animal cruelty cases and offering medical attention for pets whose owners cannot afford services.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family, I encourage you to consider visiting the RISPCA today.

Sincerely,

Gina, Tommy & Sparky
