In RI, 27 Adoptions Finalized on National Adoption Day

It was a joyous occasion at the Rhode Island Family Court as 27 boys and girls got their adoptions finalized.

Early on Saturday morning at Rhode Island Family Court in Providence, 27 families grew stronger with the strike of the judge’s gavel.

It was a room filled with tears of joy from boys and girls and new mothers and fathers, though they’ve already been called mom and dad for some time. A total of about 250 people assembled to share the moment on National Adoption Day and watch 27 adoptions finalized with 23 families.

““The Family Court extends its sincerest thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped make this celebration possible,” said Chief Judge Bedrosian. “Each year we look forward to this incredible day because it is always the happiest day here in Family Court. The Thanksgiving Season is such a perfect time of year to give thanks for these wonderful children and the very special families who are completing the adoption process today.”

The day is intended to draw attention to the countless children who would love to have a family to love. In Rhode Island, state authorities and charitable organizations have been stepping up efforts to get more children in foster care into permanent homes.

One guest was Governor Gina Raimondo, who said that as a mother, she understands the bond between parent and child.

“I also know how important it is to raise children in safe and stable homes. Our State’s future depends on our children and we are committed to helping all children grow and reach their full potential,” the Governor said. It is imperative that we continue to work together to find forever homes for the over 170 children waiting for loving, nurturing homes. Thank you to all the many people who volunteered their time to make today a success. You are making a real difference for our children and the future of our state.”

Among the speakers was Lace Holmes, 17, who was adopted five year ago. She told all the children waiting for adoption to “hang in there because it may seem like it’s not going to happen, but, it happened for me – and adoption will happen for you.”

Below is from a press release:

Congressman David Cicilline welcomed the families and friends, “I am very proud to join with the Rhode Island Family Court to celebrate National Adoption Day and to be with so many families who have experienced the joy of adoption. I know that there are many children in Rhode Island who need a place to call home, and I am very grateful to the families who open their doors and their hearts. Thank you for your commitment to making a difference in the lives of children.”
