Roger Williams Letters Go On Display Oct. 30

The letters are originals, and Roger Williams University will also hold a workshop on 17th century writing.

BRISTOL, RI — Roger Williams University will hold a workshop on Oct. 30 featuring original 17th century letters from the state founder and school namesake. The event, "Reading Roger Williams," includes a session on writing with a quill and making wax seals.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for RWU students and members of the community to see Roger Williams’ handwriting up close,” said Charlotte Carrington-Farmer, associate history professor. “Handling original documents written by our namesake brings history to life in a way that we could not achieve otherwise."

The letters, which are on loan from the Rhode Island Historical Society, are on display from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mary Tefft White Cultural Center, University Library. The quill-writing and making wax seals workshops are also from 5 to 7 p.m. at the library. John McNiff, of the Roger Williams National Memorial, is leading the workshops.
