BRISTOL, RI — With classes moved online and gatherings of 25 people or more disbanded in an effort to contain the spread of the new coronavirus in Rhode Island, Roger Williams University has extended the deadline for fall enrollment by one month.

Originally scheduled for May 1, the deadline has now been extended until June 1 as students grapple with uncertainty and the inability to visit campus. The university is one of the first in the nation to do so after canceling all planned Admitted Student Days and campus visits through at least April 6.

"Choosing a college is one of the most exciting and challenging decisions a family has to make, one that requires careful planning and clear thinking," said Amy Tiberio, a spokesperson for admissions at the university. "With the uncertainty and disruptions caused by COVID-19, Roger Williams University is extending the enrollment deadline to June 1 to provide an additional month during which the country will hopefully move past the pandemic crisis and enable families to have the time and capacity to make this critical decision for their child’s future."

While May 1 is traditionally the national date for deadlines, but it is up to the unviersity to make the final determination. Instead of leaving it to individual students to request extensions, the univeristy decided to extend the timeline for all prospective students. All related deadlines will be adjusted, as well, including housing forms, academic placement tests and orientation registration processes. Virtual campus tours are also available online.

Students and families can watch recorded information sessions online, attend virtual Q and A sessions with school officials in place of a traditional campus visit.

"We are closely monitoring the situation daily and are prepared to make adjustments to our campus visit policies if necessary," a statement from the university said in part. "The extension of the enrollment reservation to June 1 is a first step that will also be assessed as the situation evolves. Our aim is to best serve our admitted students and families as they navigate through unchartered territory during this crucial time of college decision-making."
