'Work Zone Delay' Backs Up Traffic On Rte. 37, I-95 South

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation reported a construction "delay" near Exit 1E on Route 37 in Cranston.

CRANSTON, RI — An issue at a construction site on Route 37 West in Cranston caused a traffic snarl Monday afternoon. The lane reopened by about 3:15 p.m., the Department of Transportation said.

RIDOT reported the incident on Twitter around 1:45 p.m., calling it a "work zone delay" at Exit 1E, which leads to Pontiac Avenue. Road work has been underway in the area for some time.

A driver in the area reported many Rhode Island State Police vehicles in the area, and what appeared to be a tow truck pulling a piece of heavy construction machinery, which appeared to be unstable.

Traffic was backed up along Route 37 to where it splits from Interstate 95 South at Exit 14, the driver said.

The delay was cleared and the lane reopened by 3:15 p.m., the department said.
