Cranston Woman, 65, Killed While Crossing Reservoir Avenue

CRANSTON, RI — A Cranston woman died after she was hit while walking on Reservoir Avenue Tuesday night, according to police. Janet Rochon, 65, was walking her dog when she was hit.

The crash happened around 5:40 p.m. According to police, Rochon was crossing the street, not in a crosswalk, in an unlit part of the road just south of the Willis Street intersection. She was hit by an SUV that was headed south.

Using data from the vehicle, police determined that speed was not a factor in the crash. The driver was "visibly upset," police said and showed no signs of impairment. They cooperated fully with the police investigation, along with a person who witnessed the crash. No charges were filed against the driver.

Rochon and her dog were both injured in the crash. She was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where she died soon after. The dog is expected to make a full recovery.

"This sad and tragic accident is a friendly reminder to all pedestrians to be
extremely vigilant when walking on roadways and we urge the public to utilize only
well-lit crosswalks and never assume any operator can see you," Major Todd Patalano said.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Rochon family during this very difficult
time."
