Fung's Campaign Press Secretary Has Resigned Over Tweets: ProJo

The tweets, which date from six or seven years ago, were about women and minorities, according to the campaign.

CRANSTON, RI—Andrew Augustus, the campaign press secretary for Republican gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung, has resigned, the Providence Journal is reporting. The Journal said the Fung campaign made the announcement Tuesday night. It said the mayor has accepted the resignation, effective immediately. The reason was over tweets Augustus had sent several years ago. The tweets were described as referencing women and minorities.

Fung's campaign said Augustus's social media accounts had been examined before he was offered the job. However, the background check did not go back six or seven years.

The tweets were published in the HuffPost.

"While Andrew is a different person now, and is extremely embarrassed by this, he does not want to reflect poorly on the Mayor or distract from any part of the campaign," the Journal quoted Fung's campaign as saying.
