Just 'Potato Head': Hasbro Drops 'Mr.' From Classic Toy Brand
Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head themselves aren't going anywhere, but the brand change is aimed at promoting inclusivity.
PROVIDENCE, RI — America's favorite tuber toy is getting a branding makeover. On Thursday, Rhode Island-based toy giant Hasbro announced that Mr. Potato Head, the company's unofficial mascot, will be dropping the prefix.
The Mr. Potato Head brand will be renamed to just "Potato Head," Hasbro said, "to better reflect the full line." That doesn't mean the characters themselves are changing their names, the company said, and will remain Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.
The rebrand comes ahead of the "build your own potato family" play set set to debut this fall. The company said it will be "a celebration of the many faces of families allowing kids to imagine and create their own Potato Head family." The set will include two large potato bodies, one small potato body and 42 accessories that allow for "endless ... mixing and mashing [of] all the parts and pieces."
