Every year, more pets go missing on and around Fourth of July than any other time of the year. Loud noises from public fireworks displays and smaller, backyard fireworks can make pets anxious and scared, causing them to run away. Shelters are often inundated with pets on the days following Independence Day, many of which will never be reunited with their families.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals, many pets that are lost on or around July 4 are never reunited with their families, and just 20 percent of all dogs and just two percent of all cats who enter shelters are returned home.
