Mayor Fung Comments On Wednesday's ICE Arrest

The mayor earlier signed an agreement with the Department of Justice. Police will contact immigration when they arrest undocumented suspects

CRANSTON, RI—Mayor Allan Fung doubled down Friday on his comments about the arrest of Helpis Delacruz, who was picked up by immigration officials earlier this week after he walked out of district court. Delacruz, 44, of Haenes City, Fla., was in court on an identity theft charge brought by Cranston police. He was released on personal recognizance, but he was arrested by federal ICE officials in the district court parking lot. Cranston police communicated with ICE and let them know Delacruz, who was deported in 1998, was in their custody. He will be charged with a felony for coming back into the U.S. illegally.

“Because we've signed the agreement to cooperate with federal officials when we find a criminal in our jurisdiction here illegally," Fung said. “My goal here isn't politics, it's making our families in Rhode Island safer.”

The mayor is the Republican candidate for governor, and he has differed with Gina Raimondo, the Democrat opponent, over her policy on immigration.
