New and exciting changes are happening at PLAN RI

Personal Lifetime Advocacy Networks of Rhode Island (PLAN RI) welcomes three new members to the PLAN RI community.

PLAN RI is a non-profit organization that helps families create a safe and secure future for their loved ones with disabilities. It follows the model of the PLAN organization that began in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1990 and won an international award for their social entrepreneurship. The overall purpose of PLAN RI is to answer the haunting question, “What will happen to my loved one with a disability when we are no longer able to provide him or her with a good life?”

PLAN RI announces the appointment of Alexia Williams to its Board of Directors. Alexia is a graduate student at Rhode Island College studying Special Education, while working as an assistant in the Disability Services Center. She is an alumna of University of Rhode Island ('17) with a dual Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Sociology. She is a bilingual, licensed, K-5 educator in the state of Rhode Island. Alexia was awarded a Fulbright Grant for the 2018-2019 year to work as an English Teaching Assistant in La Rioja, Spain. There, Alexia gathered qualitative research on the efficacy of special education services and quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Alexia’s passion for education and equity stems from her personal journey with her twin sister who is deaf. Alexia’s personal experiences garnered a passion for advocating and servicing individuals with special needs.

Williams stated “I think about the future for my sister, knowing that I have an active role in her plan. Acknowledging that this is not the case for others and being able to have an active role in this process, is truly inspiring. It is important that families know that their loved ones are cared for wholeheartedly.”

Raposo, who lives in Johnston, has been working with people with varying abilities since 1994. She is the recipient of the 2016 Excellence in Service Award from the Community Provider Network of Rhode Island. She was nominated for her contributions to enhancing the quality of life of the individuals West Bay supports through community inclusion via new partnerships, volunteer positions and customized employment. She is truly committed to supporting people and their families in their journey to personal life fulfillment.

Sarault, who is from Cranston, has 25 years’ experience in management, training and leadership. She actively maintains supportive relationships with individuals, family members, Board of Directors and employees. She has a proven track record for team development, fund development and marketing, while promoting team building, shared leadership and open communication. She has received the West Bay Above and Beyond Award, as well as People Development and Manager of the Year Awards. She is fully committed to supporting people with self-advocacy, self-empowerment and to help embolden people to choose the life they want to live.

John Susa, President of PLAN RI, added, "All three of these women bring needed skills and viewpoints to our organization. Within a week of inviting them to help PLAN RI 'build networks for life,' each had already contributed something new and valuable from her experience, knowledge and passion for improving the lives of individuals with disabilities."

PLAN RI is thrilled to have these three energetic, experienced and enthusiastic partners join their organization as they look towards the future.
