Not Too Late for Pie Contest at Cranston Public Library
The Cranston public libraries are participating in the world's largest digital book club.

CRANSTON, RI—Author Kate McDermott knows pies. She has taught the time-honored craft of pie-making to thousands of people. Her pies have been featured in USA Today, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Real Simple, Oprah.com, NPR and more. In the Art of the Pie she shares her secrets to great crusts, fabulous fillings, and to living a good life.
Her book is the Ocean State Libraries selection of the Big Library Read digital book club. It's the world’s largest global eBook reading club through libraries that connects millions of readers around the world with the same eBook at the same time. From now until March 30, readers, and pie lovers, can borrow McDermott's e-book and start baking. All they need is a library card.
McDermott provides all the pie combinations you can dream up with hints and tricks helpful to even the most experienced pie baker.

Plus, at least 30 of Rhode Island’s libraries (including Cranston Public Library) are adding a fun incentive to patrons who check out Art of the Pie on eZone during the Big Library Read Promotion. The incentive is a chance to win a pie-making kit including a Made-in-the-USA pie plate, a decorative 100% cotton kitchen towel, a pie server, a pie funnel, a dough kneader and a small jar of pure extract. Any patron who checks out the title may enter a chance to win this basket at their library. Libraries from Pawtucket to Westerly, Barrington to Block Island, and many communities in between will be offering one of these baskets, but the patron must stop in to enter a chance to win.
“If you are a first time pie maker, the words in the book are the very same ones I share in the pie making workshops and I hope they will give you the confidence to dip your hands into the baking bowl,” said author Kate McDermott. “A recipe is a starting place, so feel free to experiment with different seasonings and flavor combinations that please you. I hope you will enjoy the stories in Art of the Pie as well as the recipes. It was a labor of love to write it for you.”
