Powerful Storm Could Bring Days-Long Power Outages To RI

The state's drive-through coronavirus testing sites will remain closed all day due to the expected high winds and driving rain.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island is bracing for a powerful storm that National Grid said could bring days-long power outages to the region. All of the state's outdoor coronavirus testing sites will be closed on Monday due to the expected high winds and driving rain.

Anyone who has an appointment scheduled for Monday will automatically be rescheduled for Tuesday. The following test sites are affected by the closure:

  • Univeristy of Rhode Island in South Kingstown
  • Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick
  • Rhode Island College in Providence
  • Rhode Island Hospital in Providence
  • Kent Hospital in Warwick
  • Newport Hospital in Newport
  • Westerly Hospital in Westerly
  • CVS Rapid Testing Site in Lincoln
  • All respiratory clinics with outdoor tents

National Gird warned Rhode Islanders that as much as 30 percent of the tstae could lost power for up to 72 hours, classifying the storm as we "Type Three" event. High winds and heavy rain are in the forecast, with the worst weather expected between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., when the winds will begin to die down,

"National Grid has been closely tracking this storm for several days to ensure we have the appropriate plan in place for the forecast," said Michael McCallan, vice president of New England electric operations. "We know the nation and our customers are already experiencing an incredibly challenging situation with the coronavirus pandemic and we have been doing everything we can to keep the power going during these circumstances. That being said, if the weather throws a punch, we know it’s more important than ever that we ensure the safety of our customers and employees, and be ready to address the potential outages that may occur."

To help prepare for the expected outages, the company made sure that extra line crews are in place, along with 200 forestry crews to assist with restoration efforts. Staging sites and storm operation ares have been set up in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Customers who lose power can report the outage online, call 1-800-465-1212 or text "out" to 64743. Real-time outage information is available on National Grid's interactive online map.

If you see a downed wire, never approach or touch it, always assuming that it is live. Do not attempt to drive under a tree or wire that is partially blocking a road, and do not drive into a flooded street.
