PROVIDENCE, RI — It's time to spruce up your spruce. While it may feel like late summer in Rhode Island Friday, the city of Providence is already looking for the perfect tree to display in the city this holiday season.

The selected trees will be displayed at City Hall, the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center and the Providence Rink located at BankNewport City Center. To qualify, trees must be 35 to 45 feet tall for City Hall and 15 to 20 feet for the other locations.

Owners interested in supplying this year's "star sapling" are encouraged to send a photo and detailed description Lizzie Araujo, the deputy director of the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, at laraujo@providenceri.gov. Submissions must be received by Nov. 20, and must be owned by the resident and on their property.

Winning trees will be cut down and transported, free of charge, by the Forestry Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, with crane services for installation donated by Stanley Tree Service.

The winning owners will get the chance to take a photo with Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza in front of the selected trees. Masks and social distancing will be required.
