Rhode Island reported 1,280 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, by far a new high for the state as it struggles to contain a pandemic running wild.

Wednesday's report from the Department of Health said there are 282 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, the most since the middle of May. Twenty-two of those people are in intensive care and 13 are on a ventilator.

The positive test rate among first-time test takers is up around 25 percent. The low in the summer was around 2 percent.
