Rhode Island Dept. Of Health 'Public Health Out Loud' Podcast

Tune in every Friday at 5 p.m. to hear the latest episode.

PROVIDENCE, RI — As the coronavirus pandemic stretches on, the Rhode Island Department of Health launched a new podcast aimed at helping the public learn more about public health and safety. Hosted by Doctors James McDonald and Philip Chan, the weekly show was created as a continuation of the Facebook live videos streamed each week over the summer to discuss questions about COVID-19 and schools.

Dr. McDonald is a medical director for the department who has become notorious throughout the pandemic for his cheerful disposition and tendency to bring props — from masks to crayons to a Baby Yoda plush — to public appearances about the pandemic. Dr. Chan, meanwhile, is a consultant medical director with the department's Division of preparedness, Response, Infectious Disease, and Emergency Medical Services, serving as a leader in the state's COVID-19 and HIV response efforts, among others.

"Public health involves every issue, including COVID-19 and much more that affects everyone. Join us as we talk about public health for the public," McDonald said. "Our goal is to provide people with information that is accessible, engaging, and informative, and helps people live healthier and safer lives."

The show will also feature guest appearances from other health experts in the Rhode Island Health community. Four episodes are currently available, covering COVID-19, vaccinations and the socioeconomic and environmental determinants of health. New episodes will be added every Friday at 5 p.m.

"We’re excited to use this new medium to try to reach a broader audience and talk to people about emerging public health trends," Chan said. "This is one of the ways that we at RIDOH are trying to spark a conversation about how to build a healthier Rhode Island."
