Rhode Island Gas Prices Fall Another 4 Cents As Fall Approaches

As the summer driving season draws to a close, gas prices are more than a quarter cheaper per gallon than this time last year.

As the summer driving season comes to an end, the cost of gas keeps falling in Rhode Island and the Northeast, with prices more than a quarter cheaper per gallon than this time last year. Over the past week, the average price per gallon went down four cents to $2.59, the same as the natinal average.

This time last year, the average gas price was 27 cents higher $2.86.

"For local travelers who are ending summer with road trips, gas prices are significantly less expensive than they were last Labor Day," said Diana Imondi, AAA Northeast Manager of Public Affairs and Traffic Safety. "At the start of this week, two-thirds of all states have averages that are around a quarter cheaper than last year."

Heading into fall, AAA expects prices to continue to fall.

"The cheapest gas prices of the year could be coming to a retail pump near you in the Northeast in the months ahead," Imondi said. "Cheap crude oil and the post-summer demand slump are among the factors that will contribute to this major shift in savings."
