Rhode Island Prisons To Reopen For In-Person Visits

With many inmates and staff vaccinated and COVID-19 cases falling, in-person visits will resume starting April 14.

CRANSTON, RI — With vaccination rates on the rise and coronavirus cases on the decline, it's finally safe to resume in-person visitation at Rhode Island prisons, the state's Department of Corrections said Wednesday. While video visitation will still be offered, in-person visits will be offered again, starting April 14.

The vaccination and safety protocols have led to a major reduction in COVID-19 cases, the department said, making Rhode Island facilities some of the safest in the country. This is a big change from December, when hundreds of inmates tested positive. Vaccination clinics started in Rhode Island's prisons just before the end of the year.

"Re-instating in-person visits was not a small decision for a congregate setting such as ours; therefore, we must do it thoughtfully, keeping everyone’s health and safety as our highest priority," the department said in a statement. "Since we are still in the middle of a pandemic, visitation will look different than in the past, and the guidelines and procedures will be re-evaluated often."

Visitors will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon entry, and will be screened for symptoms. Only visitors aged 18 to 60 will be allowed inside. One visitor will be allowed per week, per inmate.

Masks will be required, and social distancing of at least 6 feet will be strictly maintained throughout the visit. That means that any physical contact, including hugs, will be prohibited. More information about visitor guidelines is available on the department's website.
