RI Bar Association Announces Annual $1,000 Essay Contest

This year's theme is "free speech, free press, free society."

Sophomores and juniors across the state have the opportunity to win $1,000 through the annual Rhode Island Law Day Essay Contest. This year's theme is "free speech, free press, free society."

The scholarship is sponsored by the Rhode Island Bar Association, the Rhode Island Judiciary, and the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association, along with additional support from the Rhode Island Department of Education and Roger Williams University School of Law.

The $1,000 award is named for the Honorable Francis J. Darigan Jr. A second prize of $250 is donated by the Edward P. Gallogly Family Law Inns of Court.

To enter, students must write an essay on the theme of free speech and press. Suggested topics include how new technology reshapes and affects these rights, historic and current debates on the subject and other aspects of prominent public discussions on the topic.
