RI Break Rooms, Carpools A Concern For Coronavirus Transmission
Mask-wearing is important, especially in informal gathering spaces, said Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Informal social gatherings continue to be a concern for coronavirus transmission in Rhode Island. In the past weeks, several cases were connected to break rooms and carpools, said Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Regardless of the size of the gathering, it's important to always wear a mask and maintain social distancing when with people outside the immediate household, Alexander-Scott said.
"COVID does not care if they're a family member, close friend or coworker," she explained.

Employers are asked to evaluate break rooms and close them if they are not necessary. If the break room is needed, employees should be encouraged to wear masks when not eating, maintain distance from other employees, wash their hands frequently and sanitize high-touch surfaces.
Carpooling should be avoided as much as possible, Alexander-Scott said. When carpooling, everyone should wear a mask, and windows rolled down to allow for airflow.
