See Where The Elephants Live At Roger Williams Park Zoo

From RW Zoo: August 12 is World Elephant Day and Roger Williams Park Zoo is celebrating by treating visitors to tours of the Textron Elephant Barn from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. If you were ever curious about how an elephant takes a bath, does her nails, or checks her weight, stop by the Zoo to find out. Twenty-minute tours of the barn are on a first come first served basis, and provide an up-close view of the workings of the elephant barn, and insight on the care elephants receive. There are no animal interactions on the tour, and the elephants will not be in the barn during the tours. Guests may visit with the elephants after the tour in the Ivory Ella Yard.

“We get so many interesting inquiries about our African elephants and the plight of elephants globally,” says Dr. Jeremy Goodman, executive director of Roger Williams Park Zoo. “Zoo staff are excited to be able to share their expertise in elephant care as well as anecdotes about each elephant’s unique personality,” adds Goodman.

During the tour, guests will be able to talk with the animal keepers who work with the Zoo’s African elephants Alice, Ginny, and Kate at four different locations throughout the barn. At each area, keepers will discuss various aspects of their interactions with elephants, answer visitor questions, and allow time for guests to take photos of the inside of the barn.

The Textron Elephant Barn tour is included in the price of admission. Roger Williams Park Zoo is open daily April through September from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and October through March 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Admission is $17.95 for adults, $12.95 for children (ages 2 – 12) and $15.95 for seniors (ages 62+); toddlers age one and younger as well as Zoo members get in free.
