HOPE, RI — A Rhode Island resident saw an unexpected visitor wander into their backyard recently. A fox can be seen running by in a video as seen on the Neighbors app.

The fox is only visible for the first few seconds of the clip, running from the right side of the frame, across the camera's view and away from the other side of the frame.

Foxes are a fairly common sight here in Rhode Island. According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, there are two common types: red foxes and gray foxes. The animal featured in the video appears to be the former.

"Many people enjoy seeing foxes that live near their homes, without experiencing problems," the department said. "Healthy foxes pose little or no threat to humans."

If you see a fox in your yard, there shouldn't be an issue. Give it plenty of space and never intentionally put out food, which will acclimate the fox to people and can cause issues down the road.

Keep garbage cans, compost piles, bird feeders and pet food closed tightly or otherwise inaccessible to wild animals.

More information about foxes in Rhode Island is available on the DEM's website.
