'We Just Don't Know': Final RI PawSox Season Unknown

PAWTUCKET, RI — What was supposed to be the Pawtucket Red Sox's last hurrah in Rhode Island has been anything but.

The entire baseball season is on hold amid stay-at-home orders and strict restrictions on crowds, forcing the cancellation of planned last-season-in-Rhode-Island celebrations at McCoy Stadium.

"Honestly, we don't know," said Bill Wanless, a spokesperson for the team. "We are awaiting further word from government and health care officials, as well as decisions from Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball leadership. Until then, we are thinking of all our fans and doing what we can to help the community."

The AAA Red Sox affiliate was set to play its final season in Rhode Island this summer before moving to Worcester, Massachuetts and becoming the "WooSox." Because 2020 also marks the team's 50th anniversary at McCoy Stadium, the team planned a summer of celebrations to celebrate Little Rhody and the historic stadium, offering special promotions and giveaways at every home game through the "Thank You McCoy" campaign.

The team has continued its philanthropic work in the Rhode Island community, offering scholarships to Smithfield High School students and holding a food drive with Ocean State Job Lot earlier this month.
