Animal Protection League Shelter Shuts Down

Lack of funds means the shelter must leave the building they are now renting as it is to be sold.

The building rented by the Animal Protection League on Post Rd. has been for sale for months and the League had been trying to raise money to buy but was unable to come up with funds.

“In the end, at the end of the day it was determined that we were just not financially ready to purchase a building of 640-thousand dollars,” said Tammy Flanagan, executive director of the League. “We have to be cleaned up, packed up and removed from this building by November 15th,”.

The Shelter takes in strays and surrendered animals from kill shelters in southern states. “We don’t go after a dog because it’s cute and fluffy,” said Flanagan. “We actually rescue a dog that has within 24 to 48 hours to be euthanized.”

Animals still up for adoption after November 15th will move to Cranston Animal Hospital as they have some cages available but that is only temporary. “Ultimately we really need our own building,” said Flanagan.
