Christmas Tree Collection Begins Jan. 11 in East Greenwich

The holiday has come and gone. Now it's time to plan to get that tree removed.

Curbside Christmas tree pickup in East Greenwich begins the week of Jan. 11 through Jan. 15, so now’s the time to start making preparations to tuck away those ornaments and tug at those stray tinsel strands before dragging it outside.

The town reminds residents that no plastic bags, wrapping materials, ornaments, metals, wires, foam or stands should be attached to the tree before it’s left outside.

Any questions can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 401-886-8620.

So what happens to the trees once they’re collected?

Most towns that don’t operate their own municipal composting facilities send the trees to Rhode Island Resource Recovery in Johnston, which chips them into mulch. Other communities use the trees to shore up dunes along the coast.
