East Greenwich Lane Shift Due To Division Street Bridge Project

The shift on Route 4 near the I-95 interchange will begin Monday night at 9 as part of bridge-replacement project.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — A Route 4 lane shift will begin Monday night in East Greenwich as part of the Division Street Bridge replacement project. The Department of Transportation will make the temporary shift between the I-95 interchange and the Division Street exit.

The change will be made to re-stripe the highway under the bridge as part of the $22.9 million project. The RI DOT asked that drivers use caution driving through the area, especially those on I-95 taking the Route 4 exit, as the work zone is about a half mile after the exit. One lane will remain open in each direction.

The project includes building a temporary bridge next to the exiting Division Street Bridge using a covered arch design. This bridge will carry traffic while the current bridge — which the RI DOT said carries 14,000 vehicles a day — is replaced.

The Division Street Bridge was built in 1967. In 2018 there was a $500,000 project to repair the bridge and keep it in service. But as it became close to deficient again the RI DOT said it now has to be replaced. The temporary bridge is expected to be done by the fall with the full project scheduled to conclude in 2022.
