East Greenwich Officers Honored For Icy Water Rescue Of Man, Dog

East Greenwich officers received commendations for helping the rescues at the pond off Brisas Circle on Jan. 19.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — Two police officers who helped rescue a man and his dog from the icy waters of a pond off Brisas Circle in January were recently honored. Detective Kerrie Mazur and Patrolman Mathew Cipriano were awarded Level II Commendations.

The officers worked with East Greenwich firefighters to rescue the man and his dog on Jan. 19. Mazur and Cipriano responded to the pond after receiving a report of a dog in the icy water. They arrived to find the dog's owner attempting to rescue the dog.

Mazur and Cipriano helped the man back to shore up a slippery embankment with a safety ring and a rescue rope. The officers then helped Greenwich fire rescue the dog. A Greenwich firefighter sustained a facial injury when the dog bit him during the rescue attempt.
