East Greenwich Reports Highest Weekly Coronavirus Case Count

The town reported 111 cases from Jan. 3 through Jan. 9, the highest weekly case count since the start of the pandemic.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — East Greenwich has reported 111 new COVID-19 cases in its latest weekly count, the highest number reported since the start of the pandemic.

The most recent case count, including positive tests reported between Jan. 3 and 9, is up 22 from the 89 new cases that were reported the week before. The second highest weekly case count to date occurred the week of Dec. 6, when the town reported 94 new cases.

Despite the increase in new COVID-19 cases in East Greenwich, Gov. Gina Raimondo reported a statewide decrease in positive cases at Wednesday's coronavirus briefing. Rhode Island currently has a positivity rate of 6.6%, down from last week's 7.4%.

Although the state is experiencing a hopeful trend, Raimondo said the state's current COVID-19 regulations will stay in place for another month to ensure that Rhode Island remains on track to get through the pandemic.
