EAST GREENWICH, RI — A chunk of plaster dropped from the ceiling in the gym at the James H. Eldredge School on Tuesday. According to Schools Supt. Victor Mercurio, the incident happened around 10:55 a.m. No one was hurt, but the school is closed today for an inspection.
A structural engineer is looking at all the ceilings in the school, he said. Also, an industrial hygienist has also tested the air quality. The chunk of plaster measured 11 by 11, he said. The hygienist verified the material was plaster, and there was no asbestos involved.
The students were in the gym having class when the piece of ceiling fell, but no one was directly underneath, he said. They did finish out the school day Tuesday.
