Healthtrax Takeover of EG Gold's Gym Officially Announced

The receiver of Sally Fitness, which owned the Gold's Gym in East Greenwich, has sold the business to Healthtrax Fitness and Wellness.

EAST GREENWICH, RI—The receiver of Gold’s Gym in East Greenwich announced Friday that the assets and business has been sold to Healthtrax Fitness and Wellness.

“As a result of this sale, the gym will join the Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness network and will continue to provide the best fitness experience in the region,” a joint press release from Healthtrax and Reciever Theodore Orson stated.

The deal, which we reported last week, will bring a makeover and redesign to the gym, which will be Healthrax’s 19th facility and will honor existing memberships, classes and programs.

Orson thanked the gym employees “for their tremendous work ethic during what had been a very trying time.”

Many of those employees will stay on with the company.

The Gold’s Gym went into receivership and was abruptly shut for one day in mid-December after Judge Brian Stern ordered it closed and liquidated and for bi-weekly reports from a court-appointed receiver. It reopened after the owners got a rent reprieve from their landlord.

The closure stunned many of the gym’s members who said they had no idea the business was in trouble. Many found out on social media and worried about the status of their prepaid memberships.

Healthtrax advertises itself as a “different kind of fitness center” and “your fitness partner.” It currently operates locations in East Providence and Warwick. The company was founded in 1979 and is headquartered in Glastonbury, CT.

The new 26,000 square foot Healthtrax will offer a “Cardio Cinema,” personal trainers, babysitting, a spinning studio and more than 60 classes a week.

According to the news release, the facility will also feature modern locker rooms, resistance machines, a dry sauna, hydra massage, juice bar and “more to come.”
