Keeping Your Christmas Tree Healthy this Holiday Season
If you have a real tree for Christmas like 29 million other households in the US here are a few tips to keep it healthy through the holidays
Christmas Trees are a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday season. If your tradition is to bring home a real tree for Christmas like 29 million other households in the US here are a few tips to keep it healthy through the holidays. While Christmas Décor by SeaScape may be the experts on your outdoor decorations, we also have some advice on keeping your indoor tree alive and safe.
- Local = Fresher. The less a tree has to go without water the better. Try to find a tree farm near you. We are lucky to have several in our area. Many will cut the perfect tree down, bale it and help you secure it to your car for a safe drive home.
- Recut the stem. Cut another ½ inch round off of the base of your tree before putting it in your stand. This helps your tree take up water.
- Get a proper tree stand. Make sure your stand fits your tree. You do not want to whittle the sides of the trunk to fit your stand. The outer layers of bark help your tree drink.
- Check your stand’s water level daily. Even if there is still water in the stand, top it off. Make sure your tree has plenty of water daily. The temp of the water doesn’t matter.
- Find the right spot. This is just as critical as watering. Do not place your tree near major heat sources (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents or direct sunlight). A small spark from your fireplace can spell disaster for your tree.
- Use low power lights. Mini-lights throw off less heat. Less heat is better for your tree.
- Unplug your tree. Always unplug your tree before bed and/or leaving the house.
- Don’t burn your tree. When the holidays are over and you are ready to dispose of your tree, do not burn any part of it in your fireplace. Pine trees are sparky and burn unpredictably. Consider recycling it.
