Obituary: Douglas S. Bernstrom, 85

Douglas S. Bernstrom, 85, of East Greenwich, died Tuesday, November 5, at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Elena L. (Giornelli) Bernstrom. Douglas was the son of the late Clarence R. and Laura H. (Anderson) Bernstrom.

He was a lifelong resident of East Greenwich. During WWII, Douglas was a volunteer fireman in the Town of East Greenwich. Throughout his life, he remained active with the East Greenwich Fire Association. He was also a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Greenwich.

Douglas served in the Army during the Korean War. After Army service, Douglas worked with his father at C.R. Bernstrom, Inc., in Coventry, as a manufacturing production manager. In 1968, C.R. Bernstrom Inc. was sold to Amtrol, West Warwick, where Douglas worked until his retirement.

Douglas spent his retirement enjoying winters at his home in Naples, Fla., and time with his family. Douglas will be remembered as being kind and generous. He lived his life with integrity.

Besides his wife, Douglas is survived by his daughter, Jean E. Gebing, her husband Thomas of Miami, Fla., and son Stephen D. Bernstrom, his wife Elizabeth, of Cranston.

His funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich, with visitation prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Warwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Rhode Island, 245 Waterman St., Suite 306, Providence, R.I. 02906.
