Raymond Gemma, 83, said “so long” to the world December 16, 2015.

He was the husband of Thelma (Rheaume) Gemma and the stepfather of the late Joseph Silva. He was also the husband of the late Marjorie H. (Rebello) Gemma and the father of Diana S. DelSesto, Debra M. Ficazzola, Raymond, Jr., Laurie J. and Jeffrey R. Gemma. He was the brother of Alfred Gemma and Anna Cappello and the late Joseph and Anthony Gemma. He was the grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

During this season of miracles, our family would like to share a few special memories of our dad Ray, also lovingly known as Papa to many. He loved his family with a sincere and kind spirit. Throughout his life he trusted God during blessings, but more importantly, when there was overwhelming pain. His smiles, laughter, and helpfulness were evident in all of his relationships. His ability to capture an audience with his humor and life stories was truly an art form. From the youngest great grandchild to the oldest grandchild, Papa left each one with a memory of a special story and a big smile.

Our dad was also a pioneer before his time. He was the Co-founder/Owner of Gemma’s Auto Body in East Greenwich. He was well known for his ability to work with fiberglass when corvettes were manufactured. He owned Gems Gold & Trading. A fun business was his amazing book store. Anyone could stop in to read or buy treasured novels, years before the well-known book stores of today.

We also enjoyed going to auctions. He gathered several venders and put together a “Flea Market” before the name was a household word. We did everything as a family. Our dad in his 60’s traveled to Mexico and Canada “panning” for gold, before it became of TV show. Papa’s legacy is that he utilized the gifts God Gave him, and was not afraid to fail. He believed in hard work, even if there was no reward. He believed nothing was impossible, even when circumstances didn’t support the goal. He believed in Miracles, even when others doubted. He Believes in each of his Children, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren to trust God, and with passion discover the personal gifts in which he already knows lies within us.
