WEST GREENWICH, RI – Last evening, President Donald J. Trump made his selection for the Supreme Court, choosing Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to fill the vacancy left by retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Kavanaugh, who serves on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, is a graduate of Yale Law School and clerked for the man he would replace, Justice Kennedy. Additionally, his resume includes serving for the Office of Independent Counsel as well as White House Counsel under the George W. Bush Administration.

Today Sal Caiozzo, Republican Candidate for U.S. Congress, weighed in on Trump administration’s selection and its impact on Rhode Island.

“I believe President Trump’s selection of Judge Brett Kavanaugh brings new hope to the Judiciary,” Caiozzo said. “With such an extensive record, education, and legal experience, this will give great balance to the Supreme Court – especially after clerking for the Supreme Court Justice he is replacing.”

Caiozzo’s main reason for this? Judge Kavanaugh’s vow that he will “…interpret the law, not make the law…”

“This to me is at the heart of my support of Judge Kavanaugh as our next Supreme Court Justice,” Caiozzo said. “Federalism, state’s rights, and a non-activist judiciary branch is what will ensure we have a fair Supreme Court for decades to come.”

On how this will affect the home State, the Congressional Candidate said “…after looking at Judge Kavanaugh’s extensive record, his pro-free market views will help to negate bad law that holds back opportunity and economic growth,” Caiozzo said. This is referring to a number of rulings that have given Judge Kavanaugh a pro-business-minded and anti-regulatory record.

Although in agreement with President Trump’s selection of Judge Kavanaugh, there some questions Mr. Caiozzo has on the judicial nominee. “Between some recent rulings relating to NSA collection of meta-data, and a ruling that helped uphold the Affordable Care Act, his track record has some question marks,” according to recent reports about his juris prudence.

Overall, Caiozzo was optimistic about how this will shape the court going forward.

“Kavanaugh is one who will adeptly follow in the footsteps of Justice Kennedy for the Supreme Court and is an overall sensible selection for the Supreme Court going forward,” Caiozzo said. “Hopefully the Senate Judiciary Committee will make this a speedy nomination for the betterment of the highest court of the land and the people that it serves.”

Caiozzo is a candidate for U.S. Congress, District 2
