Registration Opens for East Greenwich Parks & Rec Winter and Spring Programs

The online sign-up starts Dec. 12, and walk-in registration begins Dec. 14. Sign up early to ensure a spot in the popular programs.

EAST GREENWICH, RI—Registration is about to start for the Parks and Recreation Department's winter and spring programs. Popular offerings can fill up quickly, so now's the time to sign up and ensure a spot.

There are three ways to register.

Online registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 12. Paper registration forms are enrolled lottery style, also starting Dec. 12, meaning the paperwork should be sent to the office at 1127 Frenchtown Road beforehand. Finally, walk in registrations are accepted starting Dec. 14.

For the Children

The department is offering a wide selection of youth arts and learning classes.

Sing and Swing is new for Wednesday afternoons. It's designed to help develop an appreciation for music through games, singing and crafts.

Messy Crafts, Family Music, Ocean Explorers, and What’s Out There are returning this session. Each of these programs is specially designed to introduce the participants to new experiences, whether exploring animals and their habitats or making a craft sure to start the creative juices flowing.

Limited space is available in the My First Stitches-Kids can sew class. Participants learn different sewing techniques and are able to release their inner fashion designer, while working on multiple projects.

Home Alone

The two-day East Greenwich Babysitters' class is being offered in collaboration with the Police and Fire Departments. Participants will become First Aid and CPR certified. The class covers the techniques needed to be a safe sitter and the qualities that make up a good sitter. This class is also valuable to children who are home alone after school or in the evening.

Children's Sports and Fitness

The department is offering multiple youth athletic and fitness classes.

Youth Tennis is offered on Monday afternoons this spring. Participants learn the basic fundamentals of tennis, which can lead to a life time of enjoyment of the sport.

Squeaky Sneakers and All Sports classes are on Tuesdays mornings. This class will get the children running, jumping leaping and laughing, all while learning a new sport.

Aim High staff teach the Pre-School Gymnastics and Gym and Learn programs on Thursday mornings at the Swift Gym. These classes help participants gain self-confidence and meet new friends all while learning the basics of gymnastics.

For Adults and Seniors

Adults and Seniors interested in getting into shape or remain in shape are encouraged to sign up for Body Conditioning, Stretch and Relaxation, Define Yourself, Zumba, Pilates, Yoga or two new programs that are quickly gaining a strong following throughout the country, Hula Hoop Fitness and Stability Ball Fitness. With a mix of morning and evening classes, check your schedule to find a class that works for you.

How about, Introduction to Golf or Adult Tennis Lessons? Upon completion participants will be able to show off their new talents on the links and courts.

Looking to get a jump start on that spring garden? Come learn some tips during the three week URI Master Gardeners Workshops, starting Wednesday mornings on March 22. Their vast knowledge and experience are sure to help anyone or perhaps teach seasoned gardeners a thing or two.

The department is offering CPR/AED and First Aid classes to certify new people and re-certify current card holders. If you are a card holder be sure to check your card, as certifications are only valid for one or two years. Take two classes and receive a discount. This is an American Heart Association course.

Usher in the spring with day trips to Babcock-Smith Museum, Seabee Museum, and the Tower Hill Botanic Garden.

Or for a great way to discover hidden treasures of the state, try adventure with the Ramblers-Hiking Group, starting March 30.

Pick-up sports

Pick up athletics nights continue this Winter and Spring. Sports include Pick- Up Basketball for teens, for ages 21-34 year and 35+. Volleyball will be offered on Tuesday nights and Badminton will be offered on Wednesday nights. Both are at the Cole Middle School Gym. Each Pick-Up night requires pre-registration.

Family Events

The department is excited to announce two new special family events. Come join in on the fun during the Town Scavenger Hunt where families will be on the hunt for special items and landmarks. Participants will receive their list and use their camera as they document their finds. Those who complete the scavenger hunt while following all the rules will be eligible to win a prize. Come see if you really know the town.

The first Teddy Bear Picnic is June 3 for children 3 to 5. During the picnic, the group will enjoy songs, games, crafts and treats. Be sure to bring a blanket and a bag lunch for the picnic on the Parks and Recreation offices back lawn.

The Pitch, Hit and Run local event will take place May 2. Participants will compete in multiple competitions for a shot at the state title at McCoy Stadium. These events do require pre-registration.
