RI Schools Have No Right To Charge For Field Trips: RIDE

Rhode Island's education commissioner said schools have no right under state law to charge students for field trips and extracurriculars.

Rhode Island schools have no right to charge students for field trips, the state's Education Commissioner Ken Wagner has ruled. Now, two legal organizations are standing behind him.

Wagner issued the opinion in following after being asked by the East Greenwich School Committee, The Associated Press reported. Both the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Legal Services have stood beside the decision, saying school districts have long charged students fees for field trips despite the fact that they have no right to do so under state law, The AP continued.

According to the Associated Press, Wagner said that lower-income families should not have to worry about whether or not they can afford for their children to take part in extracurricular activities.
