RI State Police Catch Wrong-Way Driver

The accused was captured after a foot chase in Pawtucket, state police said.

WEST GREENWICH, RI — A high speed chase on Interstate-95 on Tuesday morning ended in a fiery crash in Pawtucket and with one arrest. Police are still looking for the passenger. But the driver, Thayer E. Randolph, 23, of West Greenwich, was slapped with 30 traffic citations and charged with:

  • Reckless driving – eluding officer
  • Obstruction of an officer in execution of duty
  • Resisting arrest

He is due in district court Tuesday.

According to state police, troopers at 1:30 a.m. received a report a wrong-way driver was in the northbound lanes on the Point Street ramp to I-95. The driver adjusted and headed north on I-95. Troopers tried to stop him after he took the Orms Street exit. A chase started through Providence. The driver got back on 95. Police clocked him at speeds up to 90 mph. He took the Lonsdale Avenue/Main Street exit in Pawtucket and slammed into a guardrail at Thurston Street and Newell Avenue. Before the car caught fire, the driver and a passenger ran away.
