Shippeetown Road Bridge Closing To Southbound Traffic

Only the southbound lane will be detoured during construction, which is expected to last about two months.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — Shippeetown Road Bridge will be closed to southbound traffic for about two months starting next Wednesday for road work. During construction, traffic will be rerouted around the bridge. Northbound traffic will not be affected.

Construction is set to begin on May 29 and is expected to last for two months.

The bridge carries traffic over I-95 Shippeetown Road between Crompton Road and Division Road in East Greenwich. During construction, southbound traffic will be detoured along Crompton Road, New London Turnpike and Division Road.

During construction, crews will repair the bridge's concrete arches, install a waterproof membrane, replace the curb and guardrail and repave the bridge deck. The bridge was built in 1957 and, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, carries approximately 4,300 vehicles every day.

Shippeetown Road Bridge is part of a $10.8 million project that includes 12 bridges from West Greenwich to Warwick called Bridge Group 05. The full project is set to be completed by the end of 2020, RIDOT said.
