Trees And Wires Down: East Side To EG And Elsewhere

A driver went over a live wire on Butler Avenue on Friday, one of spots where trees and power lines went down. Some objectionable language.

BARRINGTON, RI -- A Newport man was killed Friday afternoon when a tree toppled over in his front yard and pinned him. His death was the only fatal accident in Rhode Island where rescue workers were busy all afternoon statewide.

In Barrington, crews went out for a motorist after power lines fell on his car. The incident blocked part of Sowams Road, Barrington Fire said.

In Smithfield, a tree crushed a delivery truck.

Trees and power lines went down, and roofs and even one chimney, as the nor'easter gripped Rhode Island on Friday. On Charles Street, part of a roof and a chimney were draped over the road. Crews in East Greenwich went to a Frenchtown Road house wrapped in arcing electric wires. On the East Side of Providence, a fire started outside Lincoln School where a tree and power lines went down. More problems were reported in Smithfield, Wakefield Burrillville and Tiverton. Thousands of households have lost electricity.
