SCITUATE, RI — Exeter-West Greenwich fell to Ponagansett 14-12 during Saturday's Division 4 semi-final high school football match-up.

EWG coach Cliff Fortin reported that it was a spirited contest. The 1st quarter was a defensive game, hard-hitting and hard-tackling. Neither team allowed the other to score. The 2nd quarter was more of the same, with each team seeing who would blink first.

During the 3rd quarter, adjustments were made and executed. Ponagansett received the ball first and made quick work of their adjustment by running power right down the middle of the EWG’s defense. Not only did they score first, they scored two touchdowns. By the end of the 3rd quarter it was Ponagansett up 14-0.

During the 4th quarter, the tides turned and EWG/Prout found their groove. They executed their adjustment and put up two scores of their own. The difference was they went for two two-point conversions and didn’t make it. But, leave it to these two teams to come down to the end with the football bouncing off number 2 Jared Zalcberg’s chest for the tying score, Fortin said.

“It was a great game, both teams came out and gave it their all,” said Fortin. “I couldn’t be prouder of my staff and my players for all they have done this year. Ponagansett is a good team with a good coaching staff. They made adjustments which paid off for them. We made adjustments which also paid off, but we came up short. I am happy with the direction this program is going and I’m looking forward to seeing more players come out and be part of a growing successful football program.”
