Avoid Contact With Slack Reservoir: State Health

Blue-green algae blooms have been detected in the reservoir and are toxic to people and pets.

JOHNSTON, RI — Blue-green algae is growing in Greenville's Slack Reservior, according to the state health department and the Department of Environmental Management. People are advised to stay away and keep pets away because the algae can make the water poisonous for people and animals. This alert means no swimming, fishing, boating or kayaking there. The state officials also warn people should not drink water or eat fish taken from the Slack Reservoir.

The reservoir is partly in Smithfield and partly in Johnston.

According to the press release, "very high levels of microcystins were detected in water samples taken from the “Little Beach” area near Terrance Drive." People who came in contact with the water are advised to see a doctor if they experience symptoms and to take pets to a veterinarian if the animals show signs of illness.
